Top ranking scientists, journalists and scholars from Turkey, Germany, Abkhazia, Russia and Georgia discussed about the reasons and the results of the Georgian-Ossetian war in August 2008. They focused especially on the cultural, ethnic and political background of this crisis. Some of the questions risen were:

• What are the strategic objectives of the countries involved ?
• What about the human rights issue during and after the war?
• What can Europe do in order to guarantee a perpetual freedom in the region?

After the opening speech of Prof. Dr. Wulf Köpke, head of the hosting Hamburg museum, Prof. Dr. Udo Steinbach, a well-known German scholar and author of a number of books about Caucasia and the Middle East, gave an one-hour speech about the history, the people, the culture and socio-economic situation of Caucasia. He pointed out that in spite of long term repression of the caucasus people by former czarist and soviet governments the people succeeded to maintain their own cultures, languages and identities.

Tatiana Lokshina from “Human Rights Watch” in Moscow shared her impressions she got during her several visits to South Ossetia after the war. The most remarkable issue, she said, was the biased media report about the war especially in terms of casualties.

Dr. David Kakabadze, a Georgian journalist working and living in Prague, spoke about the crisis from the Georgian perspective. He concluded that even though Georgian troops started the war the huge number of civilian refugees need to get back to their home territories in Abkhazia and South Ossetia. However, he admitted, the chances for this are extremely low.

Maksim Gunjia, deputy Secretary of State of the Republic of Abkhazia, answered to a question stating that the Abkhazian people are willing to live independantly and in peace with their neighbours and that he will not stop stressing this on all platforms in the world.

Dr. Mitat Celipala from the University of Ankara, Turkey, explained in his speech the objectives of the countries and parties involved in the Caucasian region. The crisis have been there for decades, he said, it just became more public in the worldwide media after the Georgian military attacks during opening ceremony of the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. According to his opinion the international community has to see and respect the needs and wishes of the people of Abkhazia and South Ossetia rather than only focusing on the geo-political and strategic importance of Caucasia with its energy pipelins for Europe. Furthermore, due to huge number of Abkhazian and Ossetian population in the diaspora their voices need to be heard also in this regard.

Hasan Kanbolat, head of the Middle-East think-tank ORSAM in Ankara, and expert about Caucasia was the last speaker of the conference. By his impressive metaphors Kanbolat shed light on the crisis and its post-war situation both in South-Ossetia, Abkhazia and in Georgia on a empathic way. He pointed out that there are currently two parties who benefit from the crisis: Russia as the major energy supplier to Europe and the Georgian government of Saakashvili as recipient of billions of Euro-Aid from Europe. Kanbolat told about his experiences in Georgian capital Tbilisi, where people are fed up with their president Saakashvili. In the speaker’s opinion the only way to solve this crisis is accepting the independence of Abkhazia and South-Ossetia by Georgia whilst opening the gates towards NATO and EU. Otherwise, this crisis will last for decades and will ruin the already instable economy of the Caucasian region, he said.

Last but not least Admiral Dasdemir, President of the Federation of European Circassians, congratulated to the speakers for their exemplary speeches and appreciated the hospitality of Prof. Dr. Köpke. He pointed out that the Federation of European Circassians will keep supporting the peaceful dialogue between the parties and will raise the Caucasian issue on all accessible international platforms.

Federation of European Circassians
February 2009

EuroXase
 euroxase@euroxase.com

Federation of European Circassians Euro Xase 08 Şubat 2009 tarihinde Hamburg Etnoloji Müzesi’nde, Müze Müdürü Sayın Prof. Dr. Köpke ve Avrupalı Çerkesler Federasyonu işbirliği ile bir konferans gerçekleştirildi.
